Holiday 2006

As we had enjoyed our visit to Hebden Bridge in 2004 we decided to go again this year. We did not attempt any further up the Rochdale as there were reported water shortages above Todmorden (much the same as last time).

We were to set off on Saturday August 12th but the weather was very wet so we decided to postpone until things improved. Things did not really improve and by Tuesday 15th we thought we'd better go otherwise we would have no Holiday left.

Normally we would travel with Gwyn's parents and their boat Melora but as Gwyn's mum had recently had a hip replacement she could not go. However, Gwyn's sister Bronwen and her family thought they would give boating a try and they took Melora.

We took our usual route stopping the first night at Great heck and eating at the Bay Horse. We would normally stop at Brighouse on the way but there had been reports of youths bothering boats so we re-scheduled the trip to miss it out.

Lock conference on the Aire and Calder

The weather continued to give us grief with long periods of heavy rain. Here we are moored just before the Thornehill double locks waiting for a break in the weather.

A typical part of the Calder and Hebble.

As we progressed up the Calder and Hebble we had to lift all the fenders on both boats as some of the locks are barely wide enough for 2 boats. In fact some actually taper to the top and there is a real danger of getting jammed halfway up. This did happen on one occasion and we struggled to free the boats.
