Well here we are in another new year. Meg has not left the marina since she was blacked back in September. I've spent almost every weekend aboard and the Squirrel stove has had some real hammer. The stainless chimney is now not at all shiny, but I guess it will clean up when the weather permits outside work. There is some touching up to do in the lockers. The gas locker bottoms have both rusted and will need repainting and around the battery box in the engine 'ole also has some rust that needs attention. I'm guessing this is from the fumes from the batteries or simply water/condensation getting trapped around the base.

I've renewed her licence, insurance and the mooring fees have increased by 5% this year.
The costs were:

Licence £510
Mooring £1200 + Electricity (about£100)
Insurance £237

Total £2,047

This is a substantial amount and is likely to become much worse as the well publicised cuts to British Waterways bite. Also the derogation on "red" diesel is set to be removed which will double fuel costs.

There is a real danger that owning a boat becomes only for the rich which I feel will ruin the character of our waterways.

On a lighter note. I was "Froogling" for a new fleece and came across a firm that embroiders them so I thought I'd give it a go. I originally just asked for the letters NB MEG on it but within a couple of hours an email arrived asking if I wanted a dog on it also. I emailed back saying Meg was in fact a narrowboat. I emailed a jpeg of one to the company and Hey Presto! an embroidered fleece arrived this morning. Marvellous service!

And all for under £18 delivered!

The company is called Top Gear and their web address is http://www.top-gear-embroidery.co.uk/
Email: top-gear@ntlworld.com

I can't wait for the coming season!
