Boat layouts

As I hope eventually to commission a new boat I've been playing around with layouts which I feel would suit my needs.

I've been looking at various boatbuilder's sites both for widebeam and narrowboats. I feel the minimum length I could get away with on a narrowboat would be 45 feet. The ideal length would be 55 feet. This would give me all I have now plus a fixed double bed.

At 45 feet I would be doubling up on space by using the saloon as a dining area using an "L" shaped dinette. This would not be too much of a problem and would of course save on cost of building, mooring etc.

At 50' I would get the same or similar sized rooms at a 55' but not have the dinettes.

What I eventually end up with will depend on many factors, mostly financial but others too like mooring availability, as my mooring at the moment would only accommodate a 45' narrowboat. It will also depend on finding a good builder within reasonable visiting distance. I would like the extra space of a widebeam if this could be afforded as it is my intention to live aboard at some point in the future and as yet in 2 years I've not cruised a canal that would not take a wide boat.

With a widebeam a 40' X 11'6" shell would satisfy all my needs.
